Domestic violence prevention specialist elected to coalition board
YWCA staff members provide life-changing services to those in our community who have felt the blows of prejudice, domestic violence, sexual abuse, and family breakdown. It's a tough job, and not the kind one can easily leave behind at the office. Yet many choose to volunteer their time and expertise to similar advocacy organizations whose missions overlap with YWCA's.Tanika Siscoe, a Domestic Violence Prevention Specialist, is among them. She was recently elected to the board of directors of the Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence.Founded in 1990 by survivors and their allies, the coalition membership comprises representatives from domestic violence programs across the state. It’s mission is straightforward: To end domestic violence through advocacy and action for social change.“Our work includes visionary leadership, supporting our member programs, and engaging the public to play a role in ending domestic and sexual violence,” the coalition says.Tanika, already a member of the coalition, decided to run for election to the board in order to become even more involved in seeking solutions to domestic violence.“I’m looking forward to collaborating with people from other domestic violence programs across the state,” she says. “My priority is always prevention, to be engaged in anti-oppression and anti-racism work, to be part of the struggle for economic justice for all, and for the guarantee that reproductive rights will be recognized and protected. As a member of the board of the coalition, I will meet more dedicated people from throughout Washington who share my goals.”
