The Independent Youth Housing Program provides rental assistance, related housing costs, and case management to young adults, ages 18-24, who have been in foster care.

About IYHP

Program goals

  • To ensure that all youth aging out of the foster care system in Washington state have access to a SAFE and AFFORDABLE place to live so that they will not experience homelessness

  • To help prepare foster youth in becoming independent and self-sufficient so they will be successful long term

Eligibility

Foster youth who meet the following criteria may be eligible:

  • At least 18 years of age but not yet 23

  • Was a dependent of Washington State foster care within the four months before their 18th birthday

  • Is a Washington resident

IYHP Services

Youth may receive the following services:

  • Monthly rent

  • Utility payments (gas and electricity)

  • Move in costs (such as first and last month’s rent, security deposits)

  • Cost for credit checks

  • Cost for parking (if not included in rent)

  • Case management

  • Assistance in achieving Independent Living goals

  • Assistance in participating in a savings plan

  • Advocacy for developing skills for successful independence
